Holme Fen iron posts
The Holme Fen iron posts in a birch woodland clearing at Holme Fen National Nature Reserve. These Victorian cast-iron pillars were fixed in the peat before drainage; the height now standing above ground records how much the fen surface has subsided since the 1850s.

A pair of Holme Fen iron posts, enclosed by a wooden fence and surrounded by silver birch. Draining the fen caused the peat to shrink, leaving the posts exposed as a visible record of soil subsidence.

One of the Holme Fen iron posts, showing the full height now exposed above the peat. The post was originally sunk to the fen surface before drainage; subsequent peat shrinkage has left several metres standing clear of the ground.
