Are you new to Soil-Net?

Soil-Net is a fantastic free open science site, developed by Cranfield University's Environment Centre (CEC), with so much to look at and so many activities and interactive animations it can be hard to know where to start. Here's some ideas and things you mustn't miss. Also, have a look at what others are saying about Soil-Net!

Primary School Students

For Primary students, sadly it is not curretly possible to benefit from the fantastic Primary science site, as it was developed in Flash which is no longer widely in use. If you still have Flash installed, you can download the complete Primary fileset - go to the Soil-Net Primary download pages.


Secondary School Students

For secondary students, Soil-Net Soil Science is split into a number of soil-themed topics. Each one has extended information and a quiz. Start off with 'Introduction to Soil' or dip in as you wish.There are several really cool Activities. To get going, try out:


Teachers and Parents

For Teachers and Parents Soil-Net has a wealth of resources and assistance, all presented by Key Stage, together with Curriculum Maps. Soil-Net has been trialled in a number of schools and teachers comments worked back into the resource. Here's a few great starting points for you:

  • Activity sheets - loads of curriculum-linked activity sheets, each with teacher notes.
  • Photo library - over 2,700 royalty-free soil-related environmental images to help prepare your work.
  • Glossary - a huge compilation of soil terms and words.
