Soil-Net Primary fileset

If you wish to operate Soil-Net offline, you can download the Primary fileset as a 100Mb zip file which can be unpacked onto each student PC. Note the files are designed to be used online, and have links to other parts of the online Soil-Net resource. Furthermore the content may be slightly different to the online version due to a possible lag in updating the files here.

Instructions

  • Download the zip file to the PC (n.b. this is a BIG file at some 84Mb);
  • Create a new folder, say called c:\soil-net, and unpack all the files into this folder;
  • Ensure the computer can run Flash on it as well as a web browser
  • Double click the 'index.htm' file in the top level of the new folder to start it off;
  • You can press F11 to go to 'full screen' mode if required - note pressing F11 again goes back to normal view;
  • The computer does not need to be networked now and will run the Primary fileset independently;
  • If we do this ourselves, say at a show, we tend to find leaving the 'Soils Garden' running is best for most passing folk who can only spare a minute or two!
Please note that it isn't possible to provide the Secondary fileset in the same way as it isn't based on flash. However, do note there are many, many activity sheets and resources that can be downloaded appropriate for Secondary curricula which can be undertaken offline. However, now in 2026 we are designing the site to not rely on Flash at all.
